Demand Signal
EventVue built a pre-conference networking platform targeting event attendees, but shutdown in February 2010 after failing to validate genuine demand. While founders observed conference organizers expressing interest in better attendee connections, they never measured whether people actually used the platform before the event arrived. Early signups looked promising—attendees created profiles when invited—but behavioral data revealed the critical gap: profile completion rates dropped sharply, and message exchanges between attendees remained minimal. The team measured interest through surveys and organizer enthusiasm rather than tracking actual engagement metrics like daily active users or connection-initiation frequency. When conferences finally occurred, attendees reverted to traditional networking instead of leveraging EventVue's features, exposing that stated interest didn't translate to behavioral adoption. The warning sign they missed was the distinction between passive signup and active usage: people joined because organizers required it, not because they genuinely needed pre-event networking. EventVue assumed the problem existed without validating that their target users actually experienced friction worth solving before testing their solution at scale.
