Monetisation Viability
Aklimate built software enabling enterprises to distribute free carbon management tools to their suppliers in exchange for emissions data. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌The founders assumed this value exchange would drive adoption, but they never validated whether enterprises would actually pay for access to supplier emissions data. They skipped direct customer conversations about willingness-to-pay, instead relying on the intuitive appeal of their model. Their revenue approach depended on enterprises seeing immediate ROI from emissions tracking, yet they didn't test this assumption before scaling. When they launched, customers used the free supplier tools but showed little urgency to pay for the data aggregation layer. The critical warning sign—lack of pre-sales validation—went unheeded. Aklimate conflated product adoption with commercial viability. They built for a problem enterprises acknowledged but hadn't yet prioritized enough to budget for, particularly when free alternatives existed. The company ultimately couldn't convert usage into revenue and became inactive after YC Winter 2022.
