Problem Clarity
Tendo identified a fundamental barrier preventing millions of Africans from participating in e-commerce: the requirement to purchase inventory upfront. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌Aspiring entrepreneurs across Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana experienced this most acutely—they possessed sales ability and customer networks but lacked the capital to buy stock. The problem was measurable: potential sellers could be tracked abandoning the sales journey when faced with inventory costs, while existing online sellers reported inventory risk as their primary constraint. Alternatives existed but were inadequate. Traditional wholesalers required bulk purchases with cash payment. Existing e-commerce platforms like Jumia demanded sellers hold inventory. Informal lending options carried predatory rates. Early validation came when Tendo's initial users—social sellers already moving products through WhatsApp—immediately adopted the platform once inventory financing disappeared as a friction point. Repeat usage rates and seller acquisition velocity provided concrete signals that removing capital requirements unlocked a massive, previously inaccessible market segment.
