The problem was measurable: prediction markets existed globally but remained largely unregulated or offshore, leaving U.S. participants without legal alternatives. Traditional betting and sports wagering offered some outlet, but these lacked the infrastructure and credibility of regulated financial exchanges. Early validation came through regulatory engagement itself—the CFTC's willingness to grant Kalshi a Designated Contract Market license signaled that federal authorities recognized both the legitimacy of event-based trading and the demand it represented. Additionally, the explosive growth of offshore prediction markets and the consistent participation of sophisticated traders demonstrated that appetite existed; Kalshi simply needed to bring it onshore legally.
