Titan Aerospace pursued an ambitious vision: replacing expensive satellites with solar-powered atmospheric drones that could hover at 65,000 feet indefinitely. The problem was real and measurable—satellite launch costs exceeded $100 million, and coverage gaps plagued remote regions. Telecommunications companies and governments experiencing poor connectivity in underserved areas represented the most acute need. However, viable alternatives already existed: traditional satellites, terrestrial cell towers, and emerging competitors like Airbus's Zephyr drone. Titan's fatal miscalculation was underestimating technical complexity; their prototype never achieved the promised endurance or payload capacity. Warning signs abounded: repeated delays in flight tests, the company's reliance on unproven materials and battery technology, and Facebook's 2014 acquisition of competitor Ascenta signaled intensifying competition. Ultimately, Titan couldn't deliver on engineering promises before running out of capital, and Facebook acquired their assets in 2014, absorbing the team rather than the technology.
