The team prioritized the AI engine over user experience, leaving out intuitive editing tools and template flexibility that competitors offered. This execution approach backfired catastrophically. Users received auto-generated sites that looked generic and failed to match their brand vision. The warning signs were everywhere: extended development timelines, feature creep around the AI model, and insufficient user testing during development. By focusing engineering resources on algorithmic sophistication rather than shipping iteratively with real users, The Grid built a product nobody wanted. The platform shut down in 2017, having burned through millions while chasing a technological solution to a problem that required human judgment and creative control.
