Distribution Readiness
Payvision faced a critical distribution failure despite having secured what should have been an ideal channel partner. ING's 2018 majority stake acquisition promised direct access to the bank's extensive merchant network and payment infrastructure—a go-to-market advantage most fintech startups never achieve. However, this partnership became a liability rather than a strength. The startup quickly became engulfed in fraud controversies when the European Funds Recovery Initiative exposed that Payvision had processed approximately $160 million in fraudulent transactions before ING's acquisition. This reputational damage fundamentally undermined the subsidiary's credibility within ING's ecosystem and the broader payments industry. Rather than leveraging the parent company's distribution channels to rebuild trust, Payvision found itself isolated. The fraud revelation created an insurmountable barrier to customer acquisition and retention. ING ultimately announced Payvision's shutdown in November, recognizing that the subsidiary's compromised compliance history made it incompatible with institutional banking standards. The warning sign—pre-acquisition fraud exposure—should have triggered immediate remediation before integration, but instead became the foundation for the entire venture's collapse.
