Execution Feasibility
Living Videotext shipped ThinkTank, an outliner for Apple II, with deliberately minimal features—just the core hierarchical text organization that Winer had conceptualized. ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌The company prioritized getting the product to market quickly over perfection, reflected in their internal motto "We Make Shitty Software... With Bugs!" They intentionally omitted polish, extensive documentation, and advanced features competitors were building. This lean approach initially worked; ThinkTank gained traction among early adopters who valued the novel outlining concept. However, this execution strategy created lasting problems. The buggy reputation stuck even after improvements, making enterprise adoption difficult. When Winer ported to IBM PC, competitors like Symantec's MORE had already refined the category with superior interfaces and stability. Living Videotext's speed-first mentality meant they missed warning signs: customer complaints about reliability weren't treated as critical, and they underestimated how much polish mattered for mainstream markets. Their willingness to ship rough products worked for establishing a new category but ultimately limited their ability to dominate it against better-executed competitors.
