Google Trips launched in September 2016 as a travel planning app designed for leisure travelers seeking to organize itineraries and discover destinations. The app integrated with Gmail to surface flight and hotel bookings, targeting users who wanted centralized trip management. Google assumed travelers would adopt a dedicated app for planning when they already used Google Search and Maps for similar functions. The company failed to recognize that users had fragmented their travel planning across multiple platforms—booking sites, social media recommendations, and existing travel apps like TripAdvisor and Airbnb. When Google attempted to reach customers through the Play Store and App Store, adoption remained limited. The fundamental warning sign Google missed was that the travel planning market already had entrenched competitors solving the same problem more comprehensively. By 2019, Google discontinued Trips entirely, acknowledging the app had no sustainable market position. The failure revealed that integration with Gmail alone couldn't overcome user behavior patterns and competitive saturation in travel technology.
