Target Customer
Google PowerMeter launched in 2009 targeting environmentally conscious homeowners who wanted real-time visibility into their electricity consumption. The company assumed these users would actively engage with detailed energy data and modify their behavior accordingly. However, the product faced a fundamental market timing problem: most homes lacked compatible smart meters, severely limiting the addressable audience. Google discovered their intended users—early adopters willing to install new hardware—were far smaller than anticipated. The company struggled to reach customers because utility companies controlled meter deployment and adoption remained slow. Additionally, the assumption that awareness alone would drive conservation behavior proved incorrect; many users showed limited sustained engagement with the analytics. By 2011, Google shuttered PowerMeter after just two years. The warning signs were evident: dependence on third-party infrastructure adoption, unclear monetization, and overestimating consumer demand for granular energy data. The project arrived before market conditions matured, revealing that targeting the right audience means nothing without the ecosystem to support them.
