Target Customer
Bump! launched in 2009 targeting smartphone users who wanted frictionless data sharing between devices. The founders assumed people would embrace the novelty of physically bumping phones together to transfer photos and contacts—a gesture-based alternative to email or Bluetooth. This assumed a market hungry for playful, physical interaction with technology. However, the targeting assumptions didn't hold. While early adopters found the mechanic entertaining, mainstream users found it impractical and unreliable. The app required both parties present simultaneously and working devices, limiting real-world utility compared to established alternatives like email or cloud services. By 2014, after five years of operation, Bump Technologies shut down the service entirely, with CEO David Lieb announcing the removal from app stores and deletion of all user content. The critical warning sign missed was confusing novelty with necessity. The team built something technically clever but solved no genuine problem users faced repeatedly. They prioritized the "wow factor" of bumping over addressing actual friction points in data sharing workflows.
