Differentiation
Amazon Local Register entered the mobile payments space in 2014 with a wireless card reader priced at just $10, positioning itself as an affordable alternative in a market dominated by Square and PayPal Here. While the low price was Amazon's primary differentiation claim, this single advantage proved insufficient. The market had already consolidated around established players whose ecosystems offered superior software integration, customer support, and merchant trust. Amazon's card reader lacked compelling reasons for merchants to switch from competitors beyond cost—it didn't integrate meaningfully with Amazon's broader business services or offer unique functionality. By 2016, just two years after launch, Amazon discontinued the product entirely, ceasing credit card processing through the Register by February 1st. The failure revealed a critical miscalculation: price alone cannot sustain a payments product when competitors offer better platforms and established merchant relationships. Amazon underestimated how deeply Square and PayPal had embedded themselves in small business operations, missing warning signs that undercutting on price without ecosystem advantages was a losing strategy in payments infrastructure.
