Target Customer
Amazon Auctions launched in 1999 targeting individual sellers and small businesses seeking a platform to reach Amazon's existing customer base of millions. The company assumed that leveraging its established traffic and trust would naturally translate auction success, positioning the service as a direct competitor to eBay's dominant marketplace. However, Amazon discovered a fundamental mismatch: while eBay had cultivated a community culture around auctions and collecting, Amazon's customers primarily sought fixed-price retail convenience. The auction format required active bidding participation and price uncertainty—behaviors misaligned with Amazon's shopper psychology. By 2001, Amazon scaled back the service dramatically, reducing customer support and laying off staff. The warning sign Amazon missed was that audience fit matters more than audience size. Transferring millions of retail-focused customers didn't automatically create auction participants. Amazon's assumption that its brand strength alone could overcome eBay's entrenched auction ecosystem proved incorrect, demonstrating that market leadership in one category doesn't guarantee success when fundamentally different customer behaviors are required.
